Cockamamie Optimism

Today I found myself on Everett Mall Way at lunch time and I saw two guys at Mobile Lube standing by the road holding a big sign which said Next Car Gets $5 Off. So for fun I decided to turn in. They put down the sign and started running for the shop but then I just turned around and drove off (lol). But thats not what I want to talk about.

Today in the news it was announced that Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was killed by U.S. forces. Several people on talk radio voiced their opinion that this was a big blow to the insurgents and that it could be a turning point in the war (lol). I don't know how many times I have heard this kind of cockamamie optimism from war supporters. I heard it when Saddam Husseins statue was toppled, when Uday and Qusay Hussein were killed in Mosul, when the first intern government was established, when Saddam Hussein was captured, etc.

What should be apparent by now is that the US won't win this war without grossly exceeding the brutality of Saddam Hussien. The US will either be stuck in this war until enough of the public has turned against it for politicians to vote against funding for fear of losing their positions, or until the US goes bankrupt. I am sure Al-Qaeda is hoping for bankruptcy (it worked on the Soviet Union when they tried to occupy Afghanistan).

Anyway after my first venture into Mobile Lube I decided to drive around the block and turn into their driveway again. This time the two guys didnt drop their sign; they just stood there and watched me. I guess they aren't war supporters.
